I was recruited to help with editing reader-submitted materials for publication, as well as general office troubleshooting in an office with Macs much older than me. I began work on redesigning the ITN website in 2007, and by 2011 we were ready to launch a full-fledged online edition of the magazine to supplement the print edition.
Duties included retrieving newspaper PDFs from multiple print customers via email and FTP, repairing problem pages using Acrobat and Distiller, keeping detailed page flow reports, communicating with the plant’s customers via phone and email, troubleshooting network outages and sending the pages to the image setting machines for use by the press operators.
Responsible for writing copy, data entry, newspaper layout in an ancient version of Quark, miscellaneous troubleshooting on a 20-computer Mac network: printing and Creative Suite-based issues, network outages, office server downtime, managing the office's onsite backups, and assisting with the news room's OS9 to OSX transition. Created digital maps and illustrations, and helped customers both on the phone and at the front desk. Developed a File Maker database with full-text searching of back issues.
